Goodbye Dixon!

Dixon Solid Clue lovingly called, Baby Dixon,

left us to join God's Great Heard, on February 4, 2012.

He was a horse still in the prime of him life. He died of

a sudden, unexpected case of colic caused by a

displaced colon.

In the years that Dixon spent with me he taught that

patience and persistence always win out over

over pushiness or harshness. When I thought I knew

everything about training horses, he taught me how to

be humble. The lessons and love he shared with me

will be with me forever, as he joins the heard of

memories that runs through the hole in my heart.

Although I grieve for him now, the memories he has

left me hold me strong in my convictions and the

lessons he taught me reach out and touch the heart

of others. Goodbye my Baby Dixon.

Equine laminitis is a vascular disease associated with areas of ischemia or hemostasis within the laminae. The laminae secure the coffin bone/distal phalanx to the hoof wall. Inflammation associated with delamination interferes with the wall/bone bond. In advanced laminitis, the coffin bone becomes detached from the horny wall and may rotate or sink. In lay terms, this is known as “founder,” from the maritime term meaning to sink.

Volunteer Essays! What Horses Mean to Me:

When I close my eyes and think of horses, the first thing that comes to my mind is how beautiful, and graceful horses are. I picture these beautiful animals running through a pasture full of joy and happiness.
Another thing that comes to my mind is me being around horses and getting to ride. Riding a horse is the greatest feeling in the world to me. Just being around horses is awesome to me! I don't mind if I have to clean up after horses or do chores.
I can't believe that there are people in the world that would abuse horses. That makes me sick to my stomach. Why can't people see the amazing beauty in horses and how loving they are? Abuse is never the answer.
My dream for when I grow up has always been the same. That dream is growing up and buying a ranch and owning a lot of horses. I want to be able to take care of them and call them my own. I also want to be a veterinarian that cares for horses.

It's hard to say what they exactly mean to me. I know they mean getting a chance to volunteer at an equestrian place, not to mention in High School I plan to be on the equestrian team that Barlow provides for us who want to experience the thrill of getting to take care of horses- even if only for a little while.
When I get to take care of horses a sort of calming sense overtakes all the others, and it brings along with it an anticipation. The anticipation makes me want to be the very best I can be when I'm by the horses. I believe horses have a sense that can help them detect if something is wrong with someone close to them. Whether the problem is small or large, it doesn't matter, because they can feel it. There is so much violence in this world and I believe that horses are one of the last creatures to hold a sort of serenity within them and I don't want to ruin that.
I'm not going to tell you that horses are my "most favorite" animal ever because I'm sure you've heard that a thousand times and I didn't come here to repeat others, I came to be what I am and share in the responsibilities of caring for horses. Though horses are not my most favorite animal ever, they are in my top five, number three to be exact. Horses come right after wolves and tigers and to me they are as equally important as the others.
What would I do to be able to take care of horses? I would sacrifice my Saturdays, and possibly any other day of the week if you needed me, to be with them. This doesn't sound like much and you're probably thinking sarcastically, "wow, she cares enough about them to give up a whole day?" Now, you've got to understand, I really like Saturdays, I mean they are my favorite day because you don't have to go to school/work the next day (at least I don't) and you didn't have to go through school or work that day. So you see it's not just any day. To me, horses are worth giving up hanging with my friends on Saturday or enjoying the sun (when it comes).
Horses mean a lot to me and I hope that I told you enough to give you a good idea of what they mean. Like I said, to me it's king of hard to explain. I honestly look forward to working with you and taking care of the horses you rescue and help.

We've had a few spills out at the barn lately. Madeline (aka Smiley) trying for her Professional Riding Title with two spills on Gossemer Wednesday, then Thursday Christina (aka Pete) falls off Dixon due to a pinching saddle and then he launches himself off her ribs. She's sore, but mending. We need to go over safety precautions again.

Rain, Rain Go Away!

We are hoping the weather will dry up soon. But even though it is cold and wet we have an Army of determined volunteers.

Kathy (Mother of two riding students) and Samuel, a Grey Arab, (both horse and rider are green) did their first Trot! Yeah!

Rebecca (one of said riding students) is very close to completing her beginning trials.

Karen's ankle is healing nicely after being tossed and thrashed on by Peaches during her colic scare. We are so happy Peaches is better and hoping Karen will be soon.

Shawn our Stallion who had a pulled flexor tendon, did his first canter in almost a year! Leslie (Aunt Les) did the HAPPY DANCE!

Riding Lesson slots are filling up fast, but we do have a couple of slots still open.

We have our indoor arena so we can stay dry for Pony Rides on Saturday 12-2:00pm. Come join us rain or shine! Hope to see you soon!

March... in like a lamb and out like a lion!

Wow, the end of March was BUSY! We had a health scare with Peaches, she had a bad case of colic and people were sleeping at the barn watching over her. Thankfully she pulled through and is doing well!

We received a couple of new rescues, Maxwell (who already has owners), and Sun Burst (both Sorrel Quarter Horses).

Pony/Horse Rides have started up on Saturdays again. They run from 12:00 (noon) until 2:00pm, and are still only $3.00. Remember, when it rains we are indoors, so they happen rain or shine!

What Do Horses Mean to Me? By Maddie Porter (a new volunteer)

Horses use to run free all over the world. Now there are no true wild horses, they have all been domesticated. The once "wild" horses are now locked up in pens being abused and sent off to slaughter houses for money. These beautiful creatures are being tortured and abused. Looking into a horses eye's you can see all the hope, passion and love they have. I believe that horses can be your best companion and the best friend you have ever had. Would you want to see these amazing creatures suffer?

My favorite thing about horses is their beauty and grace. Horses are very big and can be dangerous but, all they want to do is be loved and cared for. Even though they are so big, they can be one of the most graceful animals. I don't care if I have to muck out stalls all day. I will do anything to be around horses and at the stable.

Things are going swimmingly at New Options despite all this rain. The T-shirts Chris Andre designed turned out really nice. We hope to have a picture soon. Felicia has finally passed her beginning riding trials and has gone into intermediate.
Kathy and Samuel Jackson, a 5 year old, gray, Arabian have moved from the indoor riding arena to the outdoor arena and are doing EXCELLENT!
Rhonda, Tori, Alyssa and Karen have moved from intermediate to advanced riding skills. I am so proud!
We now have 5 slots open for beginning riding lessons. The lessons are $25 and run 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. One student at a time. No group lessons except on Saturday when we have multiple certified instructors.

When I am broken, I know he'll be there.

I hang up his saddle, I trust his mind,

we are really close, my horse and I.

He helps me look for all I want to find,

even if my life seems one big lie.

The warmth of his back always makes me free,

I feel as free as possibly I could.

Even through all the things that trouble me.

I loosen the reigns like I always should.

Our trust is more than anyone could know.

The Pony Rides are Coming, The Pony Rides are Coming

We have been incredibly busy at New Options. Sorry it has taken us so long to update our Blog.

We will be starting pony rides on Saturday February 19th from 12 to 2pm. Since we finally have inside space for doing our Saturday pony rides when it’s raining.
I want to say congratulations to all of our students who have passed their beginning riding trials and have moved up to intermediate. It has been very exhausting and very gratifying at the same time.

Dawna had her first ride on Bear, a 3 year old Kiger Mustang. He did really well and we are proud of both of them. Alyssa has started riding hunt seat and her and Ibn, a 14 year old Arabian, are planning to start competing in arena jumping. Karen and Cougar are learning to ride English. Cougar, a Quarter horse, is a little indignant, but doing well. Dixon, a Quarter horse and Pete (Christina), have started their training for gaming and are very excited. Tori and Mona have started training level dressage. And Leslie, our trainer, is running around like a chicken with its head cut off, but we are all having a good time.

His Honor shines

R&R New Options Equine has gained a lot of respect over the years for the work we do giving help to horses in need. I truly believe that these wonderful animals do more for us than we will ever be able to repay. It is with a heavy heart that I share with you a little bit about one of the best, Ghosts Skippen Pizazz.
When Zazz first came into our care he was a timid foal, just a few weeks old (we rescued him along with his mother, a Red Roan Appy and his father a Paint Breeding Stock Stud). I have never seen a horse with so much or so many colors!
Zazzes coat brought to mind the flashy fireworks you see on the Fourth of July, yet He wanted nothing more than to please everyone. Zazz excelled not only as a student but also as a teacher, teaching trust and understanding to the newly rescued horses. He also taught patience and forgiveness to all the people around him.

Three weeks ago Zazz got his left hind leg caught in a nylon cord that was put up. The injury was severe, cutting all of the tendons and exposing a large piece of his bone. Pizazz faced his painful injury with dignity and trust. He stood quietly on his three working legs while the vet worked on him. He allowed us to hold up the bad leg and get him into the barn. Despite all of the antibiotics, and dailly care, his wound became steadily worse.

When it came time to leave his pain and struggle behind, our sweet Zazzer went without fear to join God's Heavenly Herd.

Zazz brought to us so much joy and love in his six short years, he will never be forgotten and he will be forever missed!

Going Ones

We have not had any more wild life insurers since our cougar went to live in the great hunting grounds in the sky. In his place is our new barn cat. Bartholomew he is a 6 month old Tabby.

We are going through 2 tons of hay per week which is good and bad. The good part is that we will be opening our arena soon and will have an indoor area to stay dry. The bad part is well we are going through 2 tons of hay each week and it is only November.

Sara our beloved retired Belgian and her miracle baby Rock has moved to live in Corbett. They are living with Sara's other son James and his partner West. She is going to help teach James and West how to pull the wagon so they will be able to help out with wagon rides.

Our volunteers Terese and Alexa have taken home 3 mares to love and care for and they still find time to come out and help with the other horses. Thank you both so much.

Aunt Rhonda and Cherish did their fist Canter. Cherish's gait was so smooth that Aunt Rhonda did not know what was happening, but she thought it was a lot of fun.

Our 30 year old Arab Chester is feeling up to giving lessons for some of our younger riders. He is very proud of himself and we are very proud as well.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in our Saturday Pony Ride fundraisers. We have met our goal of providing West Nile vaccines for all of our horses. A HUGE thank you to Raleigh at Burns Feed Store for providing such a huge discount we were able to get both the West Nile and Four Way vaccines. A special Thank You to all of our volunteers for their hard work.

Rescues require year round care. In addition to feed, there are costs for vaccines at least 2 times yearly, worming paste, hoof trims every 6 - 8 weeks, vet bills and other expenses as they arise.
You can help and have fun at the same time!
